Most people looking for drilling rig jobs are going about it in the wrong way. Too often they type in a popular keyword like; (oil rig jobs, roustabout jobs, drilling rig jobs). Unfortunately, they don’t find what they are looking for.

There are many ways to go about finding these elusive jobs. You just need to know how to use the Internet to best advantage.

Drilling Rig Jobs: How to Use the Internet Wisely

Most people don’t understand that the well-known oil companies are not the ones who will hire the inexperienced worker. The job search must begin with those who are doing the hiring. You need to direct your attention to the actual drilling companies.

When doing an Internet oil job search, you first seek out specific drilling companies in a specific location. I’m going to do a brief step by step demonstration of how this might look.

Looking For Drilling Rig Jobs in Texas

You can use any search engine you prefer. And I would suggest that you try different ones. But since Google is the biggest in the world, I’ll go with them for our demonstration.

Drilling Rig Jobs In Texas

Plug into the search bar, (oil drilling companies in Texas). This keyword search will bring up over 87 million results. But we’re not going to bother looking at all of those.

You’ll want to stick with the top 10 to 30 listings. For our purposes I have an image of the first five results from this particular Google search.

Drilling Rig Jobs – How to Search Deeper

This is where the real work begins. This is not difficult, but it will take time. Begin clicking on each listing to see what you find.

Interestingly, the very first listing in this search looks promising. Lewis Energy Group (http://www.lewisenergy.com/home ) has been in Texas for over thirty years. Like so many other businesses they started with one well and have grown from there.

Before I started this search I knew nothing about this company. I just clicked on the Google link and went directly to their website.

At this point you are just scanning their website for quick information. Most companies will have a button for “Careers”.

Drilling Rig Jobs with Lewis Energy

In this quick search we struck gold or oil, depending on how you look at it. They have a list of current positions they are looking to fill. As of April 2013 they have both highly skilled positions and more entry-level positions available.

Where do I go from here?

There are a number of things you could do. These are just some suggestions.

Make a word or text file for your job search.

Keep track of every promising company.

Continue clicking and scanning the sites Google lists.

Use the same technique to look in other areas.

Looking for an oil rig jobs is not complicated. It is just a matter of knowing the best way to go about it.

Other Methods for Oil Job Searches

I won’t go into as much detail here. I’ve written about this in other posts. But this is how you can rely upon others to scout out jobs for you.

You may not have thought about it this way, but news agencies can be some of your best helpers when it comes to find an oil job.

You can do a broad or focused search using this method. Again I would employ Google. When you bring up their search bar, click on the news button at the upper left of their page.

In the case of a job search in Texas, this is how I might approach it. It’s important to keep in mind, there is no one exact right way to do this. Anyway, type in something like, “Texas drilling companies”.

I didn’t do that search. However, I know that you will find a bunch of information. Again, you just want to scan through the listings and click on anything that looks interesting.

Once you arrive at a news source, scan the article for important information. No two situations will be the same. You just need to be looking for any piece of information that might provide insights into job opportunities.

Here are some things you might find. They might talk about a specific city, company, or person. All of this information can be used to do more focused searches.

This is a bit more time consuming. But this is the way to find the oil rig jobs that others can’t seem to find.

What I have demonstrated here are only a couple of search strategies. I hope this provided some new insight. I will continue to write about how to search for drilling rig jobs. Check back from time to time to learn more.

The best place to begin your search is by locating the regions where oil and gas drilling is taking place. This is where shale plays come into the picture.

What are shale plays? What the average American doesn’t know, is that the US is the home of some of the richest deposits of natural gas in the world. It is speculated by some that it could revolutionize our economy.

Geologists have known for quite some time, that there are rich deposits of gas in shale rock. Now it is not just any kind of shale rock. It is actually very technical when you begin discussing what is involved in this natural occurring resource deposit. The problem has been with how to unlock this natural resource.

After years of research, coupled with the pressure of rising gas prices, some very smart people have developed new extraction technologies. These gas extraction technologies have made the natural gas deposits available for American consumption.

Most people looking for an oil rig job have heard about Williston, ND. It is the boom town for gas jobs. This is because of the new technology that allows the natural gas to be extracted.

Oil drilling has taken place in ND for many decades. But it is only in the past several years that we have seen such a huge expansion in job opportunities. And that is solely because of the shale gas and the new extraction technology known as fracking.

Where do the shale plays come from? To be more specific, shale plays are what large oil companies do. They are lease agreements essentially between a large company and a land owner. The agreement allows the holder to drill and remove the natural gas for a stated amount. The land owner typically receives a royalty amount, not unlike a book, song, or movie contract. You might think of the play as a game move in the oil industry.

All around America there are rich deposits of this special shale rock. As I said, it isn’t just any shale rock. There are many geological and scientific factors involved. The most important thing as a job hunter to understand is that there are specific shale basins. A basin is simply a known region that has been geologically studied to determine that it contains the rich deposit of this resource.

The oil companies know about the shale basins. So they are buying up lease rights to explore specific regions within these basins. This business activity is known as a shale play. Everyone in the industry knows where these basins exist because they have been plotted on maps.

What they don’t know is if a specific lease agreement will produce a profitable well. This is where the drilling comes in. Even though the investors know where the natural gas is, they may need to sink many drill bits to find a winner.

What does this have to do with me getting an oil rig job? This is key in your job search. You need to know where all the activity is taking place. Unless you live in a region, you more than likely won’t know anything about this. Fortunately with a little researching you can gather a great deal of facts.

Oil or gas drilling is still a speculative sport. In other words there is a gamble taking place. But when they get it right, there is a great deal of money to be made. New technologies continue to develop in order to decrease the gamble. But until it becomes an exact science, this is good news for you. That means there will be a bunch of holes drilled in the earth to hopefully tap the mother load. That spells out job security for you.

The picture at the top of the screen shows the oil plays and basins around the country. Click on Oil Rig Jobs and Shale Plays to go directly to an expanded version of that map. The map will show you the areas of the country where you can begin to do further research for potential oil jobs. If you would like to learn more about this subject you can click on What Is Shale Gas.

More companies are busy buying up leasing rights for future drilling. And many in the know are comparing it to the Bakken shale formation further to the north. It is even known by industry insiders as the NeoBakken.

Here are just a few companies that are establishing an early presence in the Niobrara shale region: Samson Oil & Gas, EOG Resources, Anadarko Petroleum, SM Energy, Noble Energy, Chesapeake Energy, Whiting Petroleum, Quicksilver Resources, MDU Resources, and Bill Barrett Corporation.

If you are serious about getting a job in the oil industry, then I would suggest you begin to do some research on the Niobrara shale formation. You’ll be ahead of most people out there. Remember, the companies that I listed are those seeking drilling rights. These companies then hire drilling companies to go and do the exploring.

You want to be researching drilling companies. Those are the people you would look to hire in with. But you can begin doing research on the Niobrara and start drilling down from there.

If you need some additional help on how to do research for a job, read this article: How To Hunt For Entry Level Offshore Drilling Jobs.
I personally have been studying offshore oil rig opportunities for more than a year. In that search I have discovered some best places to look for job opportunities. And according to my research there were 39 offshore platforms operational in the Gulf as of mid December.

First I will discuss some basic job search skills. And second, I will provide you with specific locations both physically and on the Internet where you can find oil rig job opportunities.

Job Search Process

Determine your current job skills. Give this some thought. There are many transferable skills to rig operations. If you don’t have any current offshore experience, then you will need to promote your current skill set.

Use several different job search methods. Many people use one approach like: looking in a newspaper, surfing the web, or talking to friends. You are more likely to locate a job if you use multiple approaches.

Be willing to take small career steps to achieve your ultimate dream job. Think about career management. Employers are looking for progressive life experiences. Start small and grow from there.

Best Job Search Prospects for Offshore Jobs in Louisiana

Take a road trip to one or all of the major sea ports in Louisiana. If you are serious about finding a job…then it will be worth the effort. Go to the center of the action. I’ve worked in two major shipyards in the US and France. Both had places the workers hung out before and after a day’s job. Be friendly and ask people for job leads. You might be surprised with the opportunities that are turned up. This is a list of all the Louisiana Ports: Port of South Louisiana, Port Fourchon, Port of Houma – This is a major port for offshore operations in the Gulf., Port of Lake Charles, Port of New Orleans, Port of Greater Baton Rouge, Port of Shreveport, Plaquemines Parish Port.

Visit Mr. Charlie in Morgan City, Louisiana. For those who don’t know, Mr. Charlie is a decommissioned oil rig that started the whole Louisiana Gulf region oil exploration. It was the first U.S. submersible rig to drill for oil. This drilling rig is now located in a water way in Morgan City, LA. Visit them first by clicking on Offshore Jobs in Louisiana, or by putting the following URL in your search bar: (rigmuseum.com). Besides being a tourist attraction, Mr. Charlie serves as a training ground for future offshore workers. The training center offers instruction for divers, grips, cooks and riggers looking for work in the Gulf. Virgil Allen over-sees all training activities and can be reached at: 985-384-3744. My guess is that you can pick up some helpful information with a visit or simple call.

Check out the Louisiana Workforce Commission job board. I did a quick search yesterday and located more than 500 job opportunities related to offshore drilling operations in the Gulf region. And all were posted that day or two weeks back. Plug this URL (voshost.com) in your navigational bar, to go directly to the job board. Look for the Search For A Job in the middle of the page. Click on the Radius drop-down menu and click on Statewide. Then use some of the following terms in the keyword search window: roustabout, derrick hand, tool pusher, crew pusher, rigger, offshore, offshore cooks. This should provide plenty of opportunities.

Search for offshore work with job search engines. I would suggest checking out (indeed.com) and (simplyhired.com). Both of these sites pull job listings from thousands of sites, including job boards, newspapers, associations, and company career pages. Use some of the keywords I have already suggested and put Louisiana as your location. Again, I found hundreds of job opportunities. Many of the results can give you other keyword ideas. You will more than likely find duplicate content on both of these sites.

Use a reliable oil industry job search board. There are numerous oil rig worker sites you could visit. However, I found one devoted to roughneck workers in particular. I really like this website because of the vital job information you will discover. Stop by (roughneck city.com) for some very useful job information. You can click on Roustabout, to go there directly. The owner of this site has had extensive experience in the oil industry. Click on the Roughneck Jobs button on the navigation bar. You can submit your resume for free if you have at least a year of oil rig experience. There is a listing for Louisiana Offshore jobs. If you lack experience, he provides another job submission option.

I would also recommend checking out the Louisiana Oil & Gas Association web site at (loga.la). You can click on Oil Rig Jobs in Louisiana, to go there directly. This organization works closely with law makers and industry leaders. You can gain a great deal of information about current and future opportunities. All of this information can help guide you in your job search.

Another place to get helpful information would be Senator David Vitter’s website. Use the following web address, (vitter.senate.gov/public). He is heavily active in the oil industry and fighting for jobs for all of Louisiana. Again his website can keep you informed about work opportunities as it relates to the oil industry.

I hope this gives you some new options to consider when looking for Offshore Jobs in Louisiana. I wish you well in your job search.

Are you finding it a challenge to locate offshore drilling jobs? Keep reading. I’m going to outline a process that you can search for jobs online. And no, I’m not going to send you to a fee based resume posting service.

Many people are faced with the same challenge. Where do I begin to start my search for an offshore oil rig job? No doubt this is a daunting question and task.

If you are like most people, you will turn to Google and type in a variety of keyword phrases. Have you tried any of these keywords: oil rig jobs, offshore jobs, entry level oil rig jobs, or drilling rig jobs? All of these are legitimate search terms.

However, you can become quickly discouraged by the unending display of websites. No doubt you’ve visited dozens if not 100s of oil rig job sites to become more than frustrated.

My whole reason for starting this blog was to help remove some of the job search blues. And below, I will outline a process to locate a potential employer. Now let me warn you. This is not low hanging fruit that is easy to pick. However, with some effort…you can begin locating job opportunities that others could not even imagine exists.

I’m going to walk you through a job search I did this morning. Now I will admit, in some ways this was accidental. However, when I finally realized what I had done…I thought this could actually help some people in locating an offshore job opportunity.

My Method For Locating Offshore Drilling Jobs

Go to Google News – This is the starting point for all hunting. You can actually do this same search in Google. However, I have discovered that the best information will come through doing a news search.

A Google News search produces current results. It is going to list what is at the top of the news search engine. And this query will return a great deal of information.

Select Your Keyword – The keyword is the essential ingredient in your search. All of your results will be based upon that specific term. Since I study this information every day, I know Google’s intent is to provide you, the searcher, with the most relevant information.

Actually, you can try a variety of terms here. You are only limited by your own imagination. However, some terms are better to work with than others. This is just a few keyword phrases to begin with: offshore jobs, offshore drilling companies, oil rigs, offshore rigs, and offshore drilling rigs.

Begin Poking Around – This is where the real effort begins. Google will return a variety of options. My suggestion is to read the titles and descriptions and see if they connect meaningfully to you. You may want to just click on a few and begin reading.

The intent of your reading is to skim the surface. You are not doing deep reading. You are attempting to get a broad or aerial view of the subject matter. You can zoom in closer if something interests you.

Go Deep – You are a researcher at this point. In many respects this is not easy for everyone. I enjoy research so it’s not a big deal. However, you’re sort of mining for gold in a way. You are chasing information that may have value.

It really is a hit and miss kind of thing. You don’t exactly know what is going to give you the most helpful information. However, what you are looking for is information about oil drilling operations or drilling companies.

Finding A Likely Suspect – This is where the real gold begins to show up. In my own search, I was reading about a stock sale. Now you might think what does this have to do with you getting an oil rig job. In fact, it has everything to do with a job opportunity.

Oil companies are in the business of hunting for oil. That means they need businesses that supply various services. In this case I came across a drilling company. I will talk about the specific company later. The main point is that the stock analysis article listed the oil drilling company and discussed their plans to build a new drilling vessel.

This is when I realized I had struck pay dirt. They detailed in the article much about this companies operation. They discussed where they were drilling in the world, how many drilling vessels they currently owned, and what some of the their future plans were. See, this is the information that investors are interested in. It also happens to be helpful to you the job prospector.

Do A Company Search – This is when you take it to the job hunting level. Plug that company name into the primary Google search window. Again, you will have a great deal of information returned.

In my own case, the company web address was listed at the top. So naturally I went and checked out the web address. And not to my surprise, there was a wealth of information.

Company websites are there to show off what they are all about. At this point you can just start clicking on buttons. Start reading and see what you learn. Every website will be different. However, most will provide employment and contact information.

Begin Prospecting – This is where you want to attempt to contact the company. Most sites will list an email or even a phone number. Don’t be surprised if they list a variety of offices. In my own search, they listed three offices, each in a different country.

Choose the office that makes the most sense to you. Try a short to the point email first. Simply state you are looking for a position on a drilling rig. Ask who you need to speak with. Wait to see if you hear a reply. If nothing is returned in a week, then contact them by phone. Again, be brief and clearly state you want to speak with whoever hires personnel for drilling rigs.

Stay Focused – What I have described is not for the faint of heart. Finding a job is a difficult task for anyone. It really requires that you become proactive. It is the only way you are going to land an offshore drilling job.

Closing Thoughts On Locating Offshore Drilling Jobs

Job hunting is work. This is a simple fact. Many years ago a friend told me, “If you want to find a job, then you’ll have to treat your search like a job”. This guy always had a way of landing the best jobs. He now runs two major companies the last time I talked with him.

Regardless of the type of position you are looking for, his sage advice still stands. Job hunting is work. So don’t be discouraged, just keep at it.

My Offshore Drilling Search Results

The company I finally located was Vantage Drilling. I learned about the company while reading a press release in The Wall Street Journal Market Watch. If you click on the highlighted words, you will go directly to each of the resources I located. This took about an hour to locate this drilling company. My guess is it can be done more efficiently. As I said in the beginning, this was somewhat accidental for me. I wish you well in your search for offshore jobs.

A major shift towards oil drilling is currently on the increase in the US. This is largely due to an over production of natural gas. There are a number of contributing factors for this over production listed below.

What are the primary reasons for the oil drilling shift?

A slump has occurred in the demand for Natural Gas.

The primary reason for the demand slump is due to the unusually warm winter in America.

Also Natural Gas drilling and production is at an all time high.

The high production has created a surplus of natural gas.

That surplus is pushing the US capacity for natural gas storage.

To compensate for all of this, drilling companies have shifted to oil.

Where is this oil drilling shift taking place?

Some of the major areas seeing a shift in drilling patterns are Northwest Louisiana, East Texas, and Central Arkansas. More than 30 percent of the rigs have stopped drilling for natural gas. There remain 658 that are being redeployed to drilling for oil.

The total oil drilling rigs in America are at an all time high over the past 25 years. There has been an oil boom all across the country due to the fracking technology. The new procedure breaks apart the shale which eases the extraction of oil.

How can this information help you get oil rig jobs?

If you have been paying attention to the oil boom occurring in North Dakota there is a common element among workers. They have been actively going to the area to locate work. I have long advocated that the best way to find a job is to go where the work is.

Here are some suggestions for locating an oil rig job.

Do a Google News search on these terms. (Haynesville Shale, Fayetteville Shale, oil play, oil drilling contracts, and oil drilling permits)

This will provide you a list of articles detailing specific drilling activity.

From this information you will gather names of companies and specific locations of activity.

You can do further research with company names to determine contact information.

From there you can trace down specific local news services that may provide further information.

You can even call local businesses, such as hotel managers to gather discreet information on local drilling information.

From there you can contact drilling companies directly.

Or another option would be to plan a trip and attempt to contact several potential employers.

Most jobs will never walk up and bite you with a paycheck. However, if you are willing to put forth some extra effort…you are likely to be the benefactor of a great new job.

As one final consideration, don’t exclude the possibility of working for supporting industry jobs. There are many support positions when it comes to drilling for oil.

Wishing you the best in your oil job search.

Williston, North Dakota oil jobs couldn’t be better. Back in September of 2011 there was an estimated 2 to 3,000 job openings according to Ward Koeser, Williston’s town mayor. Ever since the development of the fracking technology, hard to extract oil is now made easy. And it is this drilling process that is putting places like Williston, North Dakota on the map.

My suggestion would be to scout out the area by taking a drive. Talk to some people in Williston and see what the real situation is. Line up a job and then figure out how you’re going to handle the move if you have a family.

Did you know oil rig jobs are booming in North Dakota.? Business is so good in that state that there is a billion dollar surplus in the state budget. The oil boom is due to the new fracking technology. If you’re not aware, the process involves injecting fluid deep into rock below the land surface to force oil out. Traditionally Alaska and Texas have been the heavy hitters when it comes to oil production in the United States. But now there is a big opportunity for oil rig jobs in the West. Some city folks aren’t happy about the overnight crowding conditions. New Town , N.D., had a stable population of 1,500 but in the recent months it has swelled overnight. The 18 wheelers just keep rolling into town. With all that fracking business there has been an increase in all kinds of industry. It is suggested that the area county has doubled from 20,000 to 40,000 population. This means an increase in the need of all kinds of human resources.

The oil territory is known as the Bakken oil field. It is one of the largest movements of this kind in American history. It’s like Gold Rush days. The oil field is roughly the size of West Virginia… a third of North Dakota.

If you are looking for oil rig jobs, there are 201 drilling rigs throughout the state. That’s more rigs than anyplace else, except Texas, in the United States. There is an anticipation of that number jumping to 225.

All those oil rigs means jobs. The director of North Dakota’s Department of Mineral Resources estimates that each rig represents 120 employee jobs. With a quick calculation there is a 27,000 projected new jobs in the state of North Dakota.

That doesn’t include all the pipe that has to be run to the new wells. And then there will be the need for natural gas processing plants to be built.

This is a long haul project. This is a twenty year or more opportunity. And if you get in on the ground floor it could provide long term benefits to the right worker. Projected plans are to drill in every square mile of the Bakken oil field.

Oil companies are rushing into North Dakota like hungry wolves salivating over the final sinews of a mostly eaten wild animal. Land leases were going about $100 an acre back in 2006. But they are about to expire. And now those same leases are worth $1,000 to $2,000 an acre. There are many landowners getting rich.

Oil companies want to claim their piece of the pie. And so growth is going at an astronomical rate. And it doesn’t appear that it will be slowing down any time soon.

If you are look for oil rig jobs, then Bakken oil field in North Dakota is the place you want to be.
